GOD DON'T SPEAK .... BUT THOSE WHO PLAY GOD REALLY SPEAK .... THEY'RE DOING THE TALKING

So I’m not sure what your religion exactly says about drinking alcohol. Maybe there is a chapter and verse in your holy book that says: ‘thou shall not drink alcohol.’ But I don’t know. And maybe you just do whatever some religious bigots tell you to do.

At any rate, whatever your religion does or does not say, I thought it would be useful to know that there are actually some positive health effects to moderate alcohol consumption. (Well, some of you who indulge freely and merrily obviously know of many other ‘benefits’ so I don’t need to get into those.)

Did you know that “research extending back as far as 1926 has demonstrated that drinking in moderation is associated with greater longevity than is either abstaining or abusing alcohol. The medical research evidence is now unquestionable and demonstrates that the effect is not the result of health-compromised alcoholics who abstain.”

A Harvard's Nurses' Health Study consisting of over 85,000 women reported “reduced mortality among moderate drinkers.” Now isn’t that fascinating!

In addition to having fewer heart attacks and strokes, moderate consumers of alcoholic beverages (beer, wine or distilled spirits or liquor) are generally less likely to suffer hypertension or high blood pressure, peripheral artery disease, Alzheimer's disease and the common cold. Sensible drinking also appears to be beneficial in reducing or preventing diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, bone fractures and osteoporosis, kidney stones, digestive ailments, stress and depression, poor cognition and memory, Parkinson's disease, hepatitis A, pancreatic cancer, macular degeneration (a major cause of blindness), angina pectoris, duodenal ulcer, erectile dysfunction, hearing loss, gallstones, liver disease and poor physical condition in elderly.”

Well, needless to say, I was just struck by how much scientific information there is out there about the health benefits of moderate alcohol consumption. Sounds to me like there are lots more worse things in life than a beer every now and then.

But what is still so puzzling to me is how some people can be so presumptuous - trying to play God - as to dictate how ordinary people should lead our lives.

Anyways, all heavy drinking of alcohol starts with moderate drinking, by cabearth
Well, you are right in a way and that is your opinion and experiences, I am sure.
But do you mean we must impose your opinion and experiences and force others to comply. I am 100% sure no parents have successfully able to discipline their children the way they want. Here, you we want to discipline others. It’s so naive and stupid and causes so many disharmonies among we fellow human being
It all voice down to SELF, ourselves. If we want to be bad not even God can stop you. The choice is for SELF to make and consequences SELF to face. You can’t force a cow to drink if she is not willing even if you beat the hell of her.
WE ARE ALL CREATED DIFFERENT AND THAT IS A BEAUTY. THAT IS HOW WANT GOD IT AND GOD LOVE US FOR BEING US. SHOULD YOU WANT TO DEGREATE YOURSELF I AM 100% CONVINCE GOD WILL NOT INTERFERE. So if God is silence why play God. What right do we have to impose our belief on others?
I am no supporter of alcohol nor am I going against it. This is my belief and I am sticking to it and no one can change me unless I am willing. If your opinion is different so be it but please do not cane me for my personal belief. You have not right and I will oppose you even if I have to die for not my belief but other who imposes theirs on me. Don’t play your impose your “god” on me. I have mine to answers to. He is a God of love and with reasoning.

the pessimism about drinking alcohol in this world is so high and yet there are rivers of wine in heaven as per the koran.

There is nothing insulting to Islam in the article.
The writer ie merely pointing out some benefits fo consuming alcohol, confimed by medical studies.
We have our own beliefs and values.
Anyway, as we all (except atheists) believe in GOD and the afterlife, who decides that we should act as GOD's police and judiciary and mete out punishments.
Those that really believe in GOD and the afterlife will know that the REAL punishments and rewards will begin the moment we die.
Not here on earth.
I salute Kartika. She is brave and is now world famous. How many of us in Malaysia can be so famous in so short a time.
Kartika, take care. You will be in my prayers.

Come to talk about drinking, muslims become so sticky. What about smoking? Why dont you muslims pass a fatwa about smoking when the medical world has already stated that smoking is the No 1 Killer in the world? isnt smoking addictive? Isnt smoking bad for health and also for those around you? Hypocricy? Please lah!!!

Of course, anything taken in excess is bad, not only beer. Everything is toxic, some medical scientist wrote. It is only the quantity consumed that decides its toxicity.

In two universities studies, one by a University in Switzerland and another by an Australian university many years ago, it was found that those who live the longest are those who average 2 beers a day, those who live the shortest lives are those who drink excessively, and those who don't drink live the second longest lives.

So my view, it is alright to drink beer in moderation.

The conclusion here is that moderate drinking does no harm, in fact, it is good. Of course, excessive drinking is bad, not only for the health, but to society and family as well.

But prophets cannot say it is alright to drink moderately. They can only say it is alright to drink or not to drink at all. That's the problem with religion.

I'm not sure what you mean by asking whether it is law or advice. The point is, for a Muslim, when God says, we do. God says don't drink, that means it is haram, and if we do it, then we commit a sin. We don't second-guess God when the statement is clearly written in the Quran.

In Al-Quran 2:219 it was mentioned that there "was profit" in drinking but there is more sin than profit. In the following verse you further mentioned that it was the machination of the satan and if one avoided this one will "prosper". The scripture you quoted did not say that you will end up in damnation.

In buddhism also abstention from intoxicants - any kind of intoxicants - is also advised and buddhists actually took a vow. But a lot of food contains alcohol and chinese cooking often use alcohol as well. Some of the codiments and seasoning such as soya sauce actually contains alcohol as well. I think the malays like a kind of "toddy" as well. All these contain alcohol.

The reason why buddhists were advised to abstain from alcohol was because the source of a lot of problems in family and in society came from "DRUNKARDNESS" where mara(buddhists equivalent of satan) would invade our consciousness. To buddhists mara is mostly internal. And external mara(satan) can seldom invade our heart if our own internal mara(greed, desire, hatred, delusions) do not exist or is less.

Given this context and seeing that the quran itself said that alcohol does have some "profit", doesn't this amounted to "an advice" as in buddhism than as a mandatory injunction ?

Many people, including I am sure chinese and indians, realised the destructiveness of drunkardness but we are also very mindful of the intrusiveness and greater destructiveness, as demonstrated by history, of uncontrolled religious zeal.

Could you show from the quran a direct verse of prohibition ?
